As the nights draw in and a crisp chill fills the air, step back in time to discover the grizzly history of the city with a tantalising charity ghost walk from Durham’s very own ghost whisperer, Andrew Ross.
Kicking the night off from The Bishops’ Mill at Walkergate, embark on an hour-long journey of discovery into the Durham’s ghastly past.
Charity ghost walk dates and times
Raising funds for Moving On, Durham’s leading youth homeless charity, there are two tours to sink your teeth into:
Sunday 27th October at 5pm – Meet outside The Bishops’ Mill
Sunday 3rd November at 5pm – Meet outside The Bishops’ Mill
Following a chilling stroll through Durham’s deep, dark and dangerous history, return to the land of the living back at Walkergate. Enjoy a complimentary warm drink and the welcoming surroundings of The Bishops’ Mill as you soak in your night of history.

Durham’s ghoulish past
With Durham’s rich history, there are hundreds of years of murder, mischief and mayhem that many may not even be aware of to explore, including:
- Jimmy Allen, whose pipes can still be heard at night after being imprisoned beneath Elvet Bridge, dying days before a pardon arrived.
- The Durham Puma, said to roam the woods around the city.
- Mary Ann Cotton, one of Britain’s first female serial killers, who died in Durham’s prison in the 1800s.
